Depression may appear in a wide range of symptoms such as:

- Unable to enjoy or care about the things they used to do*
- Feeling fatigued or having no energy
- Feeling restless
- Losing or gaining weight
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Having thoughts about suicide or death
*A diagnosis of depression requires at least one of these symptoms
Your doctor may recommend different treatments for your depression based on your medical history and symptoms.
Prescription medications used to treat depression often affect specific chemical messengers in the body (neurotransmitters), which are sometimes lacking in patients with depression.
Counselling or therapy is also sometimes recommended for treating depression. For example, the therapist may encourage you to practice cognitive behavioural therapy, which is a technique that assists the patient in identifying specific triggers or thoughts and teaches them how to cope or react in a more positive way.
